Automated Industrial Controls System Design
A control system design is key for improving performance, ensuring safety, and digitally representing systems, with a holistic approach to set objectives and requirements.
Overview:
Developing a Control System Design is crucial to the machine or the process in which it resides. It does not matter if you are re-controlling or beginning fresh, it is important to take in the big picture in developing designs that improves performance, safe and intuitive interactions for personnel, and define how it will be represented in the digital world. We work with our partners in a holistic approach in establishing objectives and requirements for the automated controls system.
Industries Served:
- Automotive Manufacturing
- Consumer Products
- Distilled Spirits
- Food & Beverage
SUB-Services
- P&ID’s Design Review/Maintenance: Our approach begins with Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for new construction or existing for established processes. Opus Integration reviews P&ID drawings adding details and/or updating as-built states providing for a higher level of information for collaboration. For clients that don’t have in-house capabilities but understand the importance of keeping these foundational documents current, Opus Integration will assist in maintaining your P&IDs.
- Device List/Motor List Management: In the natural evolution of a control system design a Device List and Motor List are extracted from the P&IDs which are used throughout. These documents transcend the existence of design and commissioning of an automated control system, they are used in perpetual maintenance activities for the life of the process. Opus Integration understands that these are rich sources of information that are linked to core documentation.
- ISA Modeling: ISA-88 is the standardized state model for batching processes. ISA-95 is a standard that provides for integration of enterprise and control systems in manufacturing and other industries. It defines models, terminology and best practices, ensuring effective communication and interoperability between different levels of an organization, leading to enhanced operational efficiency and productivity. We work in partnership with our clients who are new to these concepts that are the core of Industry 4.0 in overlaying an ISA-95 model of the process.
- Control Narrative: A control narrative serves as a key communication tool among engineers, operators, and other stakeholders, ensuring that everyone understands how the system is intended to operate. The control narrative is a detailed document that describes the operation of an automated system in a clear and structured manner. It outlines how the system should function, specifying the sequences of operations, control logic, interlocks, alarms, and operator interactions. Opus Integration collaborates with process engineers, operators, safety personnel, and other stakeholders to ensure all aspects of the system are understood and documented. Control narratives frequently live beyond the initial control system design where they are incorporated troubleshooting and training activities.
- MCC Single Line Drawings: An MCC (Motor Control Center) Single Line Drawing is a simplified electrical schematic diagram that represents the configuration and components of an MCC. It shows the electrical distribution system, illustrating how power is supplied to motors and other equipment controlled by the MCC. This type of drawing is essential for understanding the electrical layout, planning installations, performing maintenance, and troubleshooting issues within the motor control center. Opus Integration creates and maintains MCC Single Line Drawings for inclusion into the control system schematics and MCC Specifications.
- MCC Specification: This specification ensures that the MCC meets the specific needs of an application and complies with industry standards and regulations. It provides a comprehensive guide for engineers, manufacturers, and contractors involved in the project. We join with our clients to identify motor controls that meet both their current and future needs.
- Construction Project Management: Opus Integration is prepared to assist our client’s needs in critical times of construction when delays can have the highest impact on cost. Our team can serve an embedded liaison to our clients during the installation phase of a construction project providing information and solving problems in real time.
