Strengthening Our Skills: Basic Instrumentation Training with George E. Booth

At Opus Integration, we’re always looking for opportunities to grow our technical knowledge and better support our partners in the field. Recently, members of our team had the opportunity to attend a comprehensive Basic Instrumentation Training course hosted by George E. Booth at the Endress+Hauser facility, a leader in process automation solutions.

The multi-day course was designed to provide both classroom instruction and hands-on experience with key instrumentation technologies used across industrial environments. This training gave our team a deeper understanding of core measurement principles and strengthened our ability to assist customers with selecting, setting up, and troubleshooting instrumentation in real-world applications.

A Closer Look at the Training

The course covered a wide range of essential topics, starting with the fundamentals of level, flow, pressure, and temperature measurement, as well as an overview of control valves. Our team reviewed the symbols, terminology, and documentation practices—such as interpreting P&IDs (Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams)—that are critical in industrial process environments. For those newer to instrumentation, this foundation was invaluable. For more seasoned team members, it served as a solid refresher that reinforced technical accuracy.

Hands-on learning was a key component throughout the course. We were able to interact directly with various flow technologies including vortex shedding, electromagnetic, and Coriolis flow meters. Getting this firsthand experience allowed us to better understand the strengths and ideal applications for each type of device.

We also explored pressure and differential pressure transmitters, temperature transmitters, and the essential techniques for proper wiring, loop checkout, and troubleshooting. A dedicated troubleshooting workshop gave us practical experience in identifying issues and applying solutions—skills we can bring directly into the field to support our customers more effectively.

Advanced Instrument Setup & Commissioning

A highlight of the training was working with state-of-the-art instrumentation and learning how to set up and commission these devices. The use of on-board HMI displays gave us a closer look at how to configure instruments, verify signal outputs, and assess overall device health. These tools are critical for technicians in the field and having this training ensures our team can confidently walk into any facility and provide value from day one.

The Opus Takeaway

George E. Booth delivered a well-rounded and engaging course that went far beyond the basics. From wiring and loop testing to advanced diagnostics and configuration, this training provided our team with the skills and confidence to better serve our customers in the process control space.

At Opus Integration, we believe that continual learning is key to delivering the best solutions and support to our partners. We’re proud to invest in our team’s technical growth and thankful to George E. Booth for offering such a thorough and impactful training experience.

We’re excited to apply what we’ve learned in the field—and as always, we’re here to help you find the right instrumentation solutions for your application.
